International Cooperation

During the period of the university existence international co-operation has been the main priority of its activities. Due to the international status of the university, such organizations as International Advisory Committee, UNESCO, IAEA coordinate the establishment and its activities.

The main directions of the international cooperation are:

  • Strengthening and broadening the contract based cooperation with foreign educational and scientific centers;
  • Organization and participation in international scientific conferences, seminars, symposia;
  • Participation in international scientific projects;
  • Providing students, post-graduates, teachers with the opportunity of training and carrying out scientific projects abroad.

The university concluded treaties and agreements:

  • Agreement on academic cooperation with Kingston University (UK);
  • Agreement on cooperation in the field of education and scientific-research work with Picardie Jules Verne University (France);
  • Treaty on cooperation in the field of education and scientific-research work with Energy Institute of Austria;
  • Treaty with  MedInnovation GmbH (Germany) on fulfillment of scientific-research work by a group of university scientists;
  • Treaty on joint activity in the field of education, scientific researches, information exchange and other directions with International Academy of Sciences and Culture (USA);
  • Treaty on joint activity in the field of international students exchange programme organization  with International students association of agricultural and adjacent specialties  IAAS.

The university organized and carried out a number of international conferences, symposia, seminars including:

  • Conferences "Actual problems of dosimetry", "Sakharov readings";
  • Symposia "Business-education: state, problems and prospects", "Malignant illnesses of thyroid gland – achievements in diagnostics, therapy and reabilitation";
  • Seminar on epidemiology within the programme of Worldwide Organization of Health Care.
  • The university provided the work of the section  "Environmental education in our century" of the International Congress  "Science and education on the verge of the third millennium".

Since 1992 the university has been participating in 5 financed projects jointly with Kingston University: development of radioecological education at International Sakharov Institute of Radioecology  (1993-1995),  development of educational management system at International Sakharov Institute of Radioecology (1994-1998), development of training in the field of power engineering (1995-1997), creation of 3 modules on business education for environmentalists (1997-2000).
The university also took part in the fulfillment of 8 projects financed by the British KNOW-HOW FUND and IAEA. The following projects have been made by the  teachers, post-graduates and students:

  • "International researches and education in the field of professional health care and environmental protection" on the grant of Fogarty fund (USA);
  • "Practical modeling of vertical distribution of pollution in the fields" on the programme  SCOPES 2000-2003: scientific cooperation between the countries of Eastern Europe and Switzerland;
  • Russian-Belarusian-Ukrainian project "Support to regions development, suffered from Chernobyl Disaster" on the TACIS program;
  • Belarusian-Italian project HUMUS "Live with risk: from fatalism to management of indefinite reality";
  • "Regional post-graduate courses on specialists' preparation in the field of radiation protection and safety of radiation sources" within the regional project of IAEA "National regulatory control and programmes on providing radiation safety of work places".

A very important part of international cooperation is training of teachers, post-graduates, and students' partial education abroad. The result of the practice allows the specialists to use foreign experience of education and conducting scientific researches, thus improving the content of academic process. The university scientists have close contacts with foreign colleagues; take part in international scientific activities. Since the time of the university existence over 175 teachers, as well as over 75 post-graduates and students has had a training period in foreign educational and scientific centers, education, went for conferences, seminars and symposia.

Further broadening , strengthening, search of new forms of international cooperation are important factors of university integration in the world educational area.

Basic directions of international cooperation of the International Sakharov Environmental University are as follows:

  • Strengthening and broadening at the contract base with foreign universities, educational and scientific-research centers;
  • Cooperation with international organizations, programmes and projects;
  • Organization and participation in international scientific conferences, seminars, seminars, symposia;
  • Participation in international scientific projects;
  • International cooperation on ecological education and education in the interest of sustainable development;
  • Probations, training and implementation of scientific projects for the students, post-graduates, scientific and teaching staff abroad.

In 2007 ISEU cooperated with:

  • With 26 universities and higher schools – from Germany - (5), USA (2), Canada (1), Chinese People's Republic (1), Poland (1), Czech Republic (1), Sweden (2), Greece (1), Great Britain (1), France (2), Norway (1), Russia (4), Slovakia (1), Slovenia (1), Ukraine (2).
  • With10 scientific-research centers, institutes, scientific firms from Germany (6), Russia (2), Swizerland (1), Israel (1).
  • With educational centers and organizations from USA (1), Italy (1), Ukraine (4).
  • With 1 international programme – Program of Baltic University, Sweden.

International Sakharov Environmental University has permanent and effective contacts with offices of international organizations and programs, working at the territory of the Republic of Belarus - Representatives of UNDP in the Republic of Belarus, Children Fund UNICEF, office OSCE in Minsk, offices of Minsk International Educational Center, German service of academic exchanges DAAD. Under support of International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) at the university base there hold annual Regional Post-Graduate Educational Courses on Radiation Protection and Safety of Ionizing Radiation for representatives from CIS-countries, Central and Eastern Europe. ISEU implements long-term cooperation within the frames of the Program of Baltic University (Sweden).

 The university in 2006-2007 years under financial support of international organizations implements the following projects with foreign partners:

  • Project «Creation of complex energetic object using local types of fuel» (grant UNDP),
  • Project «Building of heating system on wood chips and raw wood at the demonstrational area of renewable energy resources “Wolma” (under governmental support of Federal Land Foralberg, Austria),
  • Project «Condition of iodine provision, goiter prevalence and indexes of mental and physical development by children of school-age in Belarus» (grant UNICEF),
  • In 2007 it is planned to implement 2 projects within the frames of programme TEMPUS on improvement of specialists-ecologists training in higher educational establishments of the Republic of Belarus and 2 educational projects on renewable energy resources under patronage of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Protection of the Republic of Belarus and financial support of OSCE Office in Minsk.

Great help in development of international cooperation is rendered by the International Advisory Committee, consisting of famous scientists in the field of ecology and radiation medicine from 9 countries:

Professor Edmund Lengfelder, Munchen University, Germany (the chairman), professor Philippe Bavey, Cornell University, Ithaca, USA (vice-chairman) and honorary members – Elena Bonner, president of Sakharov Foundation, Richard Wilson –professor, Harvard University, USA, Ralph Manhly – professor, Kingston University, Great Britain, Frantisek Yanouch – professor, King Technical University, Stockholm, Sweden, Reiner Frenzel Beyme – professor, Bremen University, Germany, Jan-Claude Laberche – professor, Picardie University of Jules Verne, Amien, France, Yuriy Korovin – professor, Institute of Atomic Energy (Obninsk), Russia, Dzhikhan Sultan Oglu – head of UNO Representative in the Republic of Belarus, Turkey, Jan Szhishko – Minister of natural resources, professor, Republic of Poland, Valeriy Klychenovich – head of department of scientific research institute of sanitary and hygiene of the Ministry of Public Health of the Republic of Belarus.

At the University base there hold the seminars and trainings, annual International Conference «Sakharov Readings: Environmental Problems of the 21st century» with participation of scientists and specialists from foreign countries, whose reports are published in the proceedings of conference. Teaching staff, students, magistrates and scientific staff of the university participate in international conferences, seminars, probations. Thus, in 2006 59 ISEU representatives had business trips to the Europe countries, CIS-countries, and USA. More than 70 representatives of foreign universities, scientific firms, as well as international organizations visited the university in 2006 year.

At ISEU there taken place the training and advanced training courses for the students and post-graduates, specialists from Russia, Bulgaria, Norway, Lebanon, Ukraine, Lithuania, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Moldova and Armenia. Within the frame of students exchange ISEU students work in labor camps in the United States and Great Britain during vocational time, in summer environmental schools in European countries and CIS-countries.

International Sakharov Environmental University is Base Organization on ecological education of CIS-countries. Attached to the Base Organization there was created the Public Council, including the representatives of the Ministers of Education of CIS-countries. The Standing Commission on Radioecological Education of CIS-countries is working on the University basis.

Annual presentation of Vernadskiy stipend is taking place in the International Sakharov Environmental University. In accordance with Decision of Executive Committee of Non-state Environmental Fond named after Vernadskiy in 2003 year the university has been pointed the base educational establishment of the Regional Competitive Commission on awarding of Vernadskiy stipend.
